Rear View Mirror - September, 1991: Tri-club picnic with Corvette Owners Club San Diego and North County Corvettes was outstanding; planning for Day at the Races; Brunch at Peohe's; Steve Montagna won Best of Show at Vista Street Rod Show; Planning brunch run to USS Ranger; Planning brunch run to wine country; Grand opening of the Dive Center; New 1992 LT1 engine, and ASR; Planning COCSD Out Back Run II ending at T-Bird Diner; 23rd annual New Years in September by Corvettes of Southern California; Tri-club trip to Laughlin Sam's Town in October; and the 15th annual Millard Fillmore Corvette Classic.

The Day at the Races was fun! Allan said he enjoyed playing with everyone. The group next to us had an interesting idea - a raffle drawing of loser tickets. Kudos to the Lamaches for a big, smoothly run event.

One fine bright Sunday in August, Eddie & Helene Sheehan, Wes & Kathy DeHoll, John Pawoll, and Joel Garry set off to meet Betty & Daryle McManus, who were early birds at the swap meet and car show at Jack Murphy Stadium. This particular show featured Vettes, and had plenty of 'em. All the usual swap-meet junk, some ridiculous cars, and some real nice cars and rods rounded out the eclectic gathering. There was even a '57 Corvette... house trailer. Naturally a Corvette got best in show (Ed Daher's, from Vista, as seen in Vette Magazine). And after a number of raffle tickets were called and not claimed, our very own early birds, Betty & Daryle McManus, won the $100 prize!

8/7/96 Meeting

At our August 7th meeting we were pleased to welcome guests Jodi & Steven Amster of Olivenhain. They are the proud owners of a beautiful '96 Grand Sport. Steven mentioned he had a Vette previously and has wanted another one ever since. Enjoy-enjoy and we sure hope we see you both again, very soon.

We also welcomed LaVonne Peyrot, Mario's wife, to our August 7th meeting.

8/21/96 Meeting:

We had no guests at this meeting but all managed to have a good meeting anyway.

This Labor Day weekend coming up should produce a couple of great articles for our next newsletter, if nothing else (you can thank me later, Joel!). Of course, "The Day at the Races" in Del Mar will be happening. That is always a much enjoyed event. I am sure our club will be well represented, as well as many other clubs in the greater Southern California area. No small thanks to the wonderful job Anne & Andrew Lamache do with the event from terrific flyers to setting up the event with the race track people and all that important follow-up responsibility, such as telephone calls, telephone calls, and more telephone calls to be sure the day goes off without a hitch. Those of us going to Phoenix for the annual Labor Day Weekend Desert Corvette Club-Millard Fillmore weekend, will be looking foward to reading the article about The Day at The Races, and hoping you other members will enjoy our forthcoming article about Millard.

Keep in mind the Route 66 Rendezvous coming up the weekend of September 20, 21 & 22. Some of us are going up and it would be a great weekedn to do a club event for September. Eddie & I are staying over Saturday night but San Bernardino is certainly close enough for a group to caravan up on Saturday (for the main event) just for the day and return late afternoon or early evening. Think about it...

Let the Good Times Roll.

"A Day at the Races" 1996

By Anne Lamache

This was a very festive event as other events were being held in the Pacific Pavilion and a strolling Mariachi ensemble provided us with music. A caravan of twenty-seven Corvettes attracted attention as we drove to the Solana gate and were escorted to the tunnel. This year we parked on the brick patio walkway instead of the grass picnic area. Our cars were in full sight and security cordoned off the area for further protection. Seventy persons purchased tickets. Attendees from North County Corvette Club, COCSD, North Coast Vettes, Southwest Corvettes and many guests enjoyed the festivities. Those attending from our club were Bob & Judy Wiltse, Joel & Laurie Garry & baby Allan, Terry & Kevin Shrock, Mary Linde & Michael Daniele, Enrique & Harriet Laso, Shawn Silva, Dan & Susan Hoskin, and Andrew & Anne Lamache. Since baby Allan brought his own lunch, we didn't charge him! For those who bet on the races, some won, some lost, however, Shawn Silva did it again. He bet on the 9th race and won over $186! [So did Mary and Michael! Ed.] As for me, I let Andrew do the betting, as I relaxed and enjoyed the day. He won $26. During the 5th race the tunnel was open for those who wished to leave early. Because of a large crowd, the betting windows in the pavilion were open, which provided us with the convenience of placing our bets. The overhead monitors enabled us to a front seat view of the races. One horse did not want to go into the stall, putting on a show for us. A horse is given two chances in a situation like this, and then scratched and replaced.

This year, North Coast Vettes was honored in the fifth race. Shawn and I were driven to the Winner's Circle to present a floral bouquet to the owner of the winning horse. A picture was taken and will be mailed to me, soon. This was a pleasant surprise and an honor for our club. For those who did not attend, it was a beautiful day, a wonderful turnout, stunning thoroughbreds, however, they do not have as many horses as we do! Colorful balloons overhead, gracious service, good buffet luncheon, and a well conducted event by all. I wish to thank all who attended and assisted me. It takes everyone to make an event like this a success. I welcome suggestions, as this provides me with the opportunity to make the right decisions. Your continued support makes this event possible every year.
